Abstract

Azadeh Akhlaghi is an Iranian photographer and filmmaker. Her work 'By an Eye-Witness' adopts the strategy of staging events that span a 90-year time frame to embody the collective memory of her country. By depicting scenes that feature the violent, traumatic, or controversial demise of poets, journalists, students, intellectuals, or political activists, Akhlaghi leads us to the realm of the sensible and lived experience.

Author Biographies

Arola Valls Bofill, University of Barcelona, Spain

Arola Valls holds a PhD in Education from the Faculty of Education of the Universitat de Barcelona, and is a researcher, teacher and independent curator. She has curated, among others, the exhibitions H(a)unting images: anatomía de un disparo at Caixaforum Barcelona and Imago vocis: eco de lo visible at the Centre del Carme in Valencia. She has published essays on photography and archival practices in catalogues and books, including World History of Women Photographers and Memoria y desacuerdo: políticas del archivo, registro y álbum familiar. She teaches at the Faculty of Education of the Universitat de Barcelona and at various private art and photography schools. Since 2009, she has collaborated with the Fundació “La Caixa” in the design of mediation projects with the public around contemporary artexhibitions at CaixaForum.

Azadeh Akhlaghi, Visual Artist

Azadeh Akhlaghi was born in Shiraz (1978) and grew up in Mashhad, Iran. She graduated from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in the field of computer science. Since 2000 her passion, however, has been photography. After leaving Australia she resettled in Iran and worked as assistant director with the acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami between 2005 and 2008.
